Description
This tour invites you to step into the heart of Zanzibar’s agricultural heritage, where you’ll explore how some of the world’s most sought-after spices are grown and harvested. Learn why Zanzibar is famously known as the Spice Island, as you discover the rich history and significance of spices such as cloves, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, coffee, cinnamon, and lemongrass — all grown right here on the island. The island’s spice trade is not only a major part of its economy but also a key element of its identity. As you walk through lush, aromatic fields, you'll gain insight into the cultivation process, from planting to harvesting, and the time it takes for each spice to mature. Along the way, you’ll also have the chance to taste fresh, tropical fruits and experience the authentic flavors that make Zanzibar so unique.
During the tour, interact with local farmers, take plenty of photos, and ask any questions you may have about the spices and farming techniques. Afterward, visit spice shops where you can buy fresh spices to bring home as souvenirs, or browse local handcrafted gifts such as watches, ties, necklaces, and rings.
One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to meet the coconut climbers (often referred to as "butterflies"), who will demonstrate their skills by climbing tall coconut trees to offer you fresh coconuts — a refreshing treat often called Zanzibar’s Coca-Cola, made without chemicals. This Spice Farm Tour is not just a journey through Zanzibar’s spice culture; it’s a sensory experience, full of sights, smells, and tastes that will stay with you long after your visit.
